CW12′s Hawkeye History

25 Jun

The Western Cape Heritage Team recently released the history of the Hawkeye Trophy. Its a good read so take a look here when you’re done with this. Something I was suprised to see was the awesome results crews in our district have been able to achieve!

Since 1976, 20 of the wins have been by crews from right here in the Table Bay!

  • CW12 (Table Bay Rovers) – 1976, 1977, 1978 & 1982
  • Monte Vista Rovers – 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 & 1991
  • 1st Factreton Rovers – 1992 & 1993(tie)
  • 1st Sanddrift Rovers – 1993(tie), 1994, 1998 & 2001
  • 1st Bothasig Rover – 2008 & 2009

Sadly, of all the above mentioned Crews, only us, the new 1st Bothasig Rovers are still around. But I think we need to take this as a sign not to let this part of the Table Bay Districts heritage die out! Rovering must live on!

Bothasig Crew Wins Hawkeye Again!

11 Jun

Howdy all!

1On Saturday, 7 June, we took part in the Hawkeye. Now, for those who don’t know, the Hawkeye is the one trophy that Western Cape Rovers compete for every year. Also, it’s a cool sword-in-the-stone looking trophy (Awesome!)

Anywho, this year’s theme was “1950′s – The Ratpack – casino evening” and boy did the organisers deliver!

Each crew member was issued with pokerchips and told they had to go around the casino (3rd Claremont Scout Hall) and make us much ‘money’ as possible by gambling. This included: Texas Hold’em poker, poker dice, Black-Jack, balloon darts (not what you think), 30 Seconds and horse races. From the beginning already we had the competition, thanks mostly to sheer dumb luck, and a little bit of skill.

4Four horse races took place hourly, and thanks to our jockey, Llewellyn, we won all four! Eventually we had to stop and cash in, so we could see who had the out-gambled the others. The chips were totalled for each crew, then divided by the amount of crew members to get a per-member average. The crew with crew with the highest average would be the winner.

The totals were in, and it was announced that we had won (actually we owned the competition by a huge margin), with and average of R460 per member. Now the Hawkeye Trophy is back with us for the second year in a row!

Overall it was an awesome evening, creating a chance for us to socialise with the other crews, and to enjoy ourselves. Thanks to the organisers!

Feedback: Western Cape Kontiki 2009

Hey hey!

This past weekend we had another great competition run by Charles and his team so first off well done to all the organisers for what turned out to be a fantastic event!

Well done to the winners of the Neville Coxon trophy (overall winners), 1st Bergvliet, you guys clearly aced it! As for the rest of the results, click here to download the full scoresheet.

Now for the news from our district, in 4th position for the Nevill Coxon trophy came 1st Bothasig (well done guys!), 1st Factreton in 14th and 1st Blaauwberg in 16th. Not bad at all!

Results for other events are as follows:

  • DB McEwan, for raft construction: 1st Bothasig – 5th Place, 1st Factreton 7th Place & 1st Blaauwberg 15th
  • J Stratton, for best cooking: 1st Bothasig -  7th, 1st Blaauwberg – 9th & 1st Factreton – 13th

  • Theme Dress Trophy: 1st Bothasig & 1st Factreton – 2nd, 1st Blaauwberg – 4th
1st Bothasig's Kontiki Raft

1st Bothasig's Kontiki Raft

Prehaps not a true part of our district, but it may be worth noting that the 1st Monte Vista Guides achieved 17th place for the Neville Coxon Trophy and the 1st Table View 20th. And all you guys (sorry girl scouts) who think your manhood is safe, remember that second place was taken by the Cape Peninsula Ranger Guides!

Feedback – Quinn Trophy 2008: Scout Olympics

19 Oct

Quinn Trophy took place at the Hawequas Scout Ranch on Sunday 19 October 2008. As usual, this was to take the form of a fun Area competition and the theme which had been chosen was: The Scout Olympics. The competition was attended by 13 troops, namely: 1st Durbanville, 2nd Fishhoek, 1st Bothasig, 3rd Pinelands, 2nd Langa, 1st Northpine, 2nd Kenridge, 1st Table View, 1st Heathfield, 1st Monte Vista, 3rd Gugaletu, 1st Factreton and 7th GASP.

The competition started late due to unfortunate traffic problems, but needless to say all things soon got back on track. The competition involved several bases which scouts from each team had to attend there were also a number of STA’s and a meal scouts had to complete.

The bases included the following:

Volley Ball – This was a simple tournament using the standard rules. The top team was 1st Bothasig.

Tug-O-War – A tournament of tug-o-war on the main field. The result was a tie between 3rd Pinelands and 2nd Fishoek.

Wrestling – This was a new addition to the program. A large groundsheet was covered in soapy water and teams had to line up on opposite sides. The aim was to pillow wrestle your opposing team off the groundsheet. The top team in this tournament was 2nd Fishhoek.

Commando Course – A typical commando course which needed to be completed by a patrol in the fastest time possible. It included obstacles such as a commando bridge, crawl-under and our trademarked Tunnel-of-Infatuation. The top time was 8:18 by 3rd Gugaletu.

Other non-competitive bases included handicapped Kim’s games, marksmanship and catapult building.

In regard to STA’s, 1st Bothasig got the highest overall score. Teams were also required to cook the longest possible damper or twist and present it to us (for the record, if it was broken anywhere only the longest piece was counted). The longest twist presented in the time limit was by 3rd Pineland, measuring 1.81m. I think its worth mentioning that a 2.13 long twist was presented by 1st Factreton, but sadly well outside the given time.

In the end the final top 3 were as follows: Third place – 3rd Pinelands, second place – 2nd Fishhoek & winners – 1st Bothasig! Well done guys!
