Feedback: CW12 District Orienteering 2009

1 Aug

Hi All!!!

Ok so today was the 2009 District Orienteering and I’ve got to say I feel it was a big success. We tried a few new things (longer times, more points to test time management, etc.) and think all went well! Just a few point I’d like to make clear before I get into the results:

There are 7 active troops in the district, that means around 21 full patrols at least. This year we only saw 8 teams from 4 troops. To those who didn’t attend, this competition is FREE! It’s only a few hours on one day a year and everybody sees the date on the planner almost 6 months in advance. There aren’t many valid excuses for not attending so please don’t let the scouts miss out on these opportunities. In the same breath, it’s difficult to plan these type of events and we’ve already lost out on Roberts Trophy for lack of interest, don’t let the Orienteering go in the same direction!

Another point, for those teams that did attend, remember orienteering is about 2 skills: Mapping & Management. Junior teams tended to score low due to bad plotting, but with practice this gets much better (even the top orienteers were juniors once). The senior teams lost out due mostly to bad time usage, this comes down to planning. We are going to be putting the orienteering plans out on this site so feel free to use them as practice sessions in your troop!

So here are the final the results:

  1. 1st Table View Cobras   -   260 points
  2. 1st Bothasig Hawks   -   247 points
  3. 1st Blaauwberg Seagulls   -   166 points
  4. 1st Bothasig Leopards   -   119 points
  5. 1st Bothasig Eagles   -   117 points
  6. 1st Bothasig Cobras   -   78 points
  7. 1st Factreton Swifts   -   0 points
  8. 1st Factreton Leopards   -   -3 points

The maximum points achievable was 350. Click here to download the full score breakdown in .pdf format. As alway, you are all winners for attending so WELL DONE!!!

1st Table View Cobras - Winners of District Orienteering 2009

1st Table View Cobras - Winners of District Orienteering 2009

Finally, we will be putting up all the documentation and maps we used on the site at a later stage so watch this space!

Cheers!

Hi All!

cw12orient_08_01The CW12 District Orienteering Competition is going to be run at the Koeberg Nature Reserve on the 1st August 2009. The competition will be run in the form of score orienteering, which is the same format we have been using on District and Provincial level for the last several years.

Scouts are to report in on the field below the parking area at the Koeberg Nature Reserve at 09h00 on Saturday morning. All teams are to consist of standing patrols wherever possible. Uniform is not required, but all scouts must be identifiable and must therefore all be wearing their group scarves. The closing ceremony will take place at approximately 12h00.

Teams don’t need to register before the competition, but we ask that all troops please inform us of the number of patrols that will be attending. This can be emailed to me at devon@cybersmart.co.za

Each team is required to have the following:

  • Protractor
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Rulers
  • Signed consent form per member
  • Good scouting attitude
  • Anything else you may find handy

In addition, all parents/scouters who are driving in need to have their drivers licences/ ID’s with them as these are checked at the gates to the reserve.

Finally, we have kept the competition early to leave the afternoon free. The Koeberg Nature Reserve has a great mountain biking trail, which is relatively easy and we encourage patrol leaders/scouters to use this as an activity. This is not compulsory, nor is it part of the competition. Troops/patrols wishing to do this trail need to make their own arrangements and permit applications. Note maps are not available online but can be collected at the gates on entry. The bike track is approximately 20km. For more info about the Koeberg reserve CLICK HERE.

2009 CW12 Cooking Competition Results

2 Jun

On Friday 29 May, we held our first ‘Over The Coals’ cooking competition, at 1st Bothasig scout hall. 7 teams attended, however 1 abandoned ship after the weather turned sour (if you can’t take the heat, or the cold in this case, get out the kitchen) the teams worked together well, and without mishap (mostly), though I’m glad that I didn’t have to taste a couple of the meals served. Here are the standings:

  • 1st – 1st Milnerton Albatros’ with 214 points
  • 2nd – 1st Bothasig Cobras with 193 points
  • 3rd – 1st Monte Vista Zebras with 153 points
  • 4th – 1st Bothasig Eagles with 142 points
  • 5th – 1st Bothasig Hawks with 135 points
  • 6th – 1st Monte Vista Springboks with 85 points

Maximum points achievable was 250. Best site award went Bothasig Cobras, best table setting went to Milnerton Albatros’, as well as best starter and best main course, best dessert went to Monte Vista Zebras. In the end, all of the teams enjoyed themselves, and proved that CW12′s standard is exceptionally high.

Well done to all teams that partook. To those who didn’t, YOU MISSED OUT.

Over The Coals: CW12 Cooking Competition

14 May

Hi! Here are the details for the upcoming Cooking Competition on the 29th May. Click here to download the PDF version for distribution.

Greetings All!

As you all know, Roberts Trophy has been postponed, but that doesn’t mean we are going to let the Scouting go cold. In fact we are going to heat things up!

On Friday the 29th May, from 18h30 – 22h00 at the 1st Bothasig Scout Hall we will be holding the first ever District Cooking Competition! This will take the place of your normal Friday night troop program, so don’t miss out!

Who can participate: All scouts/guides are invited to attend. A troop may enter as many teams as they like and there is no upper or lower limit to the amount of members per team (but keeping it small is recommended). Standing patrols are not a requirement, but we’d like to see everyone there and not just the seniors.

In addition we also invite adult teams to partake. These can be made up of any amount of scouters/rovers/parents. So this is a chance for everyone to get a taste of what our scouts are doing!

Adult and child teams will not be competing against one another and each section will have its own set of awards.

What does the competition entail: Each team will be required to prepare a full 3 course meal, completely over fire or coals. The team will then need to serve this meal around a table with a judge as a guest. Remember this is not just about the meal! We are looking for the whole package so preparation, hygiene, table setting, presentation, etc. will all be judged over and above the actual meal.

As far at the meal itself goes, the team can prepare anything they want, but only within the following guidelines:

-          Meal MUST consist of 3 courses.

-          There must be a savoury bread.

-          The starter must be a vegetarian soup.

-          Main course may only contain beef or lamb as a meat

-          Main course must contain brinjals (aubergines)

-          Main course must be served with a starch (but NOT the normal rice, pasta or mash. Think out of the box!)

-          Dessert can be either boiled or steamed and must be served with a sauce which you prepare (NOT box custard!)

-          Cooking can start at 18h45 and starter must be served at 21h15 strictly.

-          Remember you could receive a judge from any religious denomination so try to cater Halaal and Kosher.

Your team will also need the following: Gas cooker (for washing) and light, all your required cooking equipment, table to seat the team and guest, cutlery and crockery for the team +1, wash up equipment, braai or half-drum, firewood/charcoal and a STA kit.

In addition there is also an R10 entry fee to be put towards a trophy which can be paid on the day.

Teams don’t need to apply beforehand, but you won’t be assured of a site. To avoid this please contact Devon at devon@cybersmart.co.za to book a spot and for any other queries!

Hope to see you all there!

Feedback – District Orienteering: Rietvlei

1 Aug

The CW12 District Orienteering Competition for 2008 began earlier in the year for us, during the initial planning stages of plotting the points and pre-visiting the site. This Friday evening, however, would see all our plans coming into fruition.

cw12orient_08_01

Weasel, Mammoth and Lion arrived at Rietvlei at 17h30 to set up the points for the competition. The gates were left unlocked for us, as arranged with conservation officer Koos. We spent the next hour and a bit running/driving around putting up markers and getting somewhat wet in the process.

At 18h30 the 11 participating patrols from around the district had arrived and the PL’s were then briefed on the ground rules. We were disappointed to see that 1st Edgemead, 1st Milnerton and 1st Monte Vista had not sent in patrols. Once the PL’s had been briefed and the maps and point sheets handed out, the signal to begin was given!

The official send-off time was 19h07. From this point teams had exactly 90 minutes to plot their maps and find the codes of the various markers. For every minute they arrived late, 2 points were deducted from their final score. A maximum of 230 points could be obtained by finding the 20 markers. Each marker had a point value of 5-20, depending on its distance and difficulty to find.

Once the last of the teams reported in, the PLs were called and shown the correct locations of the points. The teams were then sent out to retrieve them.

The final parade took place at approx. 21h00 and the end positions were announced with the top 3 positions all being taken by 1st Bothasig. Other scores can be seen on the score-breakdown attached. The scouts went home and we stayed to find the few remaining markers, and also came across 3 1st Blaauwberg scouts whose patrol seemed to have forgotten about them.

Feedback – Roberts Trophy 2008: Milnerton 2 Melkbos

18 Jul

The 2008 Roberts Trophy, the annual competition of the CW12 District began on the evening of Friday the 18th in the parking area of the Milnerton Canoe Club on Woodbridge Island. Here the teams were instructed to cook a meal from raw ingredients for the judges. The 2 required ingredients were fish and potatoes, the teams were also required to make a cooked dessert. The team with the best overall score for the meal was the 1st Blaauwberg Penguins.

After the meal, teams moved down to Milnerton Beach for a first aid base which included lifeline throwing an stretcher carrying. Base 2 was a stalking base which required teams to stalk through the dunes of Rietvlei Beach past the judges. At both these bases the best scores were achieved by the 1st Blaauwberg Penguins.

The third base was a estimation base taking place in the parking lot of Bloubergstrand. Here teams had to estimate the height of a hotel, length of the parking lot, volume of a bin, etc. The best score here was by the 1st Table View Cobras.

The next base consisted of 2 sections. First, the teams had to build a signal tower to lift a patrol member 2m off the ground. The patrol was then split into 2 and a message had to be sent to their members via Morse Code across Kleinbaai. The top scorers for the pioneering and the signalling were the 1st Bothasig Hawks and 1st Factreton Eagles respectively. There was then a handicap awareness base with the 1st Bothasig Hawks doing the best.

The final base took place in a park on the beach at the southern tip of Milkbosstrand. There was an obsticle course which teams had to complete in the minimum possible time, while singing their STA patrol song. The best time was 1:50 which was achieved by the 1st Bothasig Eagles.

Finally the teams arrived at the endpoint, Melkbosstrand NSRI base. Here most of the teams went to sleep and only the 1st Bothasig Hawks attempted and completed the optional scavenger hunt activity which required teams to find numbers leading to a cellphone number in the end.

The STA scores were tallied and the final scores were reached. The top 3 positions were as follows: 3rd place – 1st Bothasig Eagles, 2nd place – 1st Blaauwberg Penguins and 1st place – 1st Bothasig Hawks.

The closing ceremony was held on the morning of the 19th after which all the teams departed for a well earned rest.
